James Van Horn Melton (1952-2025)

It is with sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of former CEHS president James (Jamie) Van Horn Melton at his home in Atlanta on June 28, 2025. After completing his PhD at the University of Chicago in 1982, he taught briefly at the University of Arkansas and Florida International University before joining the History Department at Emory University in 1987. There, Jamie enjoyed a reputation not just as an eminent scholar of early modern German and Habsburg Europe, the Enlightenment, and the Atlantic World, but also as a valued and supportive colleague. He retired from Emory in 2023. An active member of the Central European History Society during much of his career, Jamie served as its president in 2012-2013.

Central European History will publish a memorial in honor of Jamie Melton in one its next issues.
